Kickboxing Sport

Kickboxing is a modern martial art that started in the 1960s in Japan, combining Karate and Muay Thai. It developed in the 1970s in the USA as “full-contact Karate.” The sport uses punches, kicks, and knee strikes, evolving from real full-contact fighting. Today, styles like K-1 and Dutch Kickboxing are practiced worldwide.

Origin and Development

Japanese Origin (1960s): After a competition held in Bangkok in 1963, where Japanese Karate athletes faced Muay Thai fighters, promoter Osamu Noguchi combined Karate and Muay Thai techniques to create a new, contact-focused sport. The first official matches were held in 1966 in Osaka, initially allowing strikes to the head.
